The Greener Waste Bio-Selector for stress free compliance

A practical and low-cost on-site bacteria breeding and acclimatising system for achieving absolute bacteria control in existing wastewater treatment systems.

Using the well proven process of pre-assimilation technology, the Bio-Selector is a self contained unit allowing breeding of the most suitable bacteria to deal with specific problems.

Bio-Selector Technology

The Greener Waste Bio-Selector bacteria breeding systems are a controlled method of bacteria cultivation and dosing specific to the needs of individual sites.

Based on samples taken from the site the appropriate bacteria are bred in a laboratory and dried. The Bio-Selector breeding unit is then installed on site and filled with the raw sewage. The dried bacteria are introduced to the raw sewage within the Bio-Selector and start to multiply. Once they reach the optimum level they are fed automatically into the main process system, where, because the bacteria are now fully acclimatised to their new environment, their effectiveness is quickly apparent.

The Bio-Selector is fully automated and can be operated either on a continuous basis or used to deal with temporary or intermittent situations where the existing system suffers from overloads, toxic shocks or from the receipt of non-standard effluent.

Absolute bacteria control is achieved through a thorough understanding of the demands and requirements of the client allied to comprehensive scientific research and development. Absolute bacteria control is fundamental to the efficient reduction of:-

  • Fats, Oils and Grease
  • Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
  • Organic solids and sludge
  • The removal of Ammonia
  • The control of Specific Sludge Volume Index (SSVI)
The Bio-Selector range includes the following models:-
  • Bio-Selector 100 : pictured here, neat, portable and cost effective
  • Bio-Selector 1000 : Mid range, for the larger sites.
  • Bio-Selector 2000 : The heavyweight solution capable of serving the largest sites.

The Theory Behind The Bio-Selector

Figures for the bacterial population of activated sludge vary widely, however they seem to centre around 108 colony forming units (cfu) per ml, pre-cultured bacterial products are in the region of 109 cfu per gram. Therefore 1 gram of pre-cultured bacteria is approximately equivalent to 10 ml of activated sludge.

When the pre-cultured bacteria is activated in the BioSelector breeder unit, there is an initial lag phase before the bacteria begins to follow its normal logarithmic growth curve. In the growth phase, the bacterial numbers double every half hour or so as long as there are sufficient nutrients.

As this is a logarithmic progression, after 8 hours the theoretical growth for a more realistic 1 kg would be such that the 1 kg (originally equivalent to 10 litres) would have a similar bacterial count to 150 m3 of activated sludge.

As high rate activated sludge processes can be operated with a removal rate as high as 1 kg BOD per kg Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) a day, it can be seen that such a theoretical plant could remove some 450 kg BOD/day (running at a typical 3,000mg/l MLSS). Of course conditions are never ideal and there will be some restriction on the growth by limitation of nutrients. These inevitably vary from site to site and may require separate attention; however the above gives a clear explanation as to how the BioSelector can have such a marked influence on a sewage treatment plant.
