The Problem

Filter beds or biological filters at sewage treatment works can often become clogged up with solids which cause ponding and tracking within the bed. The result of this is a reduction in the oxygen available to degrade the sewage and hence a reduction in the performance of the bed. This can lead to poor quality final effluent, in particular, increased ammonia levels.

The Greener Waste Solution

The full treatment lasts between 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the beds and the severity of the problem. Greener Waste will provide all the necessary labour and equipment and manage the project from start to finish including on-site ammonia testing and settled solids in the Filter Bed Effluent. The bed is treated in situ and normally consists of daily application followed by a flushing process.

Biological cleaning uses specifically selected bacteria to accelerate the degradation of the solids in the bed. This process alters the physical nature of the solids and hence they pass easily with filter bed effluent into the humus tank.

The final treatment will be to ensure the bed is performing to the optimum. To achieve this the bed will be seeded with a specific blend of pre-cultured bacteria to reduce BOD and then finally with autotrophic and heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria.

Performance Guaranteed

Every filter bed clean carries a three year performance warranty subject to certain conditions which are agreed at the outset of the project.

Proven Results

Independent Neutron Moisture Probe Analysis indicated up to a 70% reduction in the amount of sludge in filter beds. Organic solids were reduced from 33% to 11% saturation.
